JSBG - Profile

Background

The concept for the JSBG was formed in late 2008.
The idea of the JSBG is provide a forum in Brisbane, where Japanese speakers - both Australian and Japanese nationals - can gather on a regular basis, to converse in Japanese, in a business-level environment.

The aim of the group is thus twofold, to:

1/ provide a regular Japanese-language-only forum, and
2/ provide a forum where speakers of Japanese can meet in a business-like setting and discuss current topics relating to the Australia-Japan relationship, with a particular emphasis on Queensland-related business projects and cultural issues.

Rationale

Currently, there are number of ad-hoc forums in Brisbane that cater to individuals wishing to exchange English and Japanese conversation. Primarily, these forums cater to the needs of students- both Australian and Japanese – with both English and Japanese language being used, in a casual environment, typically a pub or coffee shop.

The forums are generally free-flowing, rarely structured, and the conversation and topics usually left to both the imagination and abilities of the attendees. English conversation dominates due to the abilities and needs of both the English and Japanese attendees.

Format

The JSBG will meet :

• regularly – once per month if demand exists
• generally after office hours,
• in the Brisbane CBD
• for 60-90 minutes duration

Each of the JSBG meetings will be facilitated by a contributing corporate sponsor, who will generally provide the venue.

Membership to the JSBG functions will be by invitation only, extended by an established member, who will ‘sponsor” any new invitees, and personally introduce them to other members at the events. Members will receive advice of upcoming functions and events through email and website information.

JSBG functions will generally follow the following format:

• Welcome speech ( in Japanese) by JSBG coordinator, acknowledging corporate sponsor, introducing and identifying new members and outlining proceedings for the evening ( 5-10mins)
• Self-introduction by new members (in Japanese) to the meeting ( 5-10 mins)
• Short presentation by an existing member (5 mins), comprising either an introduction to that member’s company, goods or service or a presentation on a current Queensland-Japan related topic
•Guest speaker presentation ( for those events featuring a guest speaker)
•Informal discussion amongst members in a cocktail reception ( ie occasional seating/table) format, with beverages available.

Japanese speakers – parameters

The main point of difference for JSBG membership and functions will be the requirement for the speaking of Japanese language. It should be emphasized that ANY level of Japanese ability is invited, with the understanding that the JSBG events will be undertaken in a Japanese-language environment, with all members attending strongly encouraged to maintain this format for the meeting.
